I CARRY YOUR HEART WITH ME

SATB + piano and solo violin

NOTE FROM THE COMPOSER

Edward Estlin Cummings [“e. e. cummings”] was an American poet, painter, playwright, and essayist. Cummings (1894-1962) earned two degrees from Harvard (where he was awarded an honorary visiting professorship) and wrote a staggering 2900 poems, plus four plays, two autobiographical novels, and several essays. His poetry is in modernist free-form, and he frequently uses lowercase spellings for expression. I included violin in this setting of “i carry your heart with me,” to thread a different color into the fabric of the voices and piano. The voice/piano is the initiator of the conversion, and the violin represents the “other person” in this musical “play.”
